A host of new telecommunications poles are proposed for Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

The UK has a target for 5G coverage across all populated areas by 2030. The new faster broadband coverage and ambition to roll it out is seeing telecoms companies race to set up the infrastructure required.

Three UK has submitted a trio of applications to North East Lincolnshire Council for three 15m high monopole masts. These are all explicitly linked to the rollout of 5G.

Telecom masts spread

Three UK's 15m monopoles are proposed in two sites in Grimsby and one in Cleethorpes. If approved, there will be one along Cromwell Road, close to Grimsby Leisure Centre. Another is set for land west of Winchester Avenue, opposite Toynton Road.

Finally, the third monopole is proposed for land outside Lindsey Hall Nursing Home in Clee Road, Cleethorpes. All three applications contain a number of documents outlining the benefits of 5G and an extensive report allaying health concerns.

The health report by the Institution of Engineering and Technology concludes that small 5G base stations "will reduce radio wave exposure to individual smartphone users" and improve local 5G capacity. A single individual has posted more than 30 comments in objection on all three applications, mainly citing health concerns.

Elsewhere, there has also recently been a notice placed in Freeman Street, Grimsby, that BT plans to install a 9m telecomms pole there.

A yurt in North East Lincolnshire

Yurts are traditionally used as homes by nomadic groups in inner Asian countries like Mongolia. But the rounded tents have increasingly gained an appeal in the UK for glamping and wellness retreats.

A 24ft yurt and wooded kitchen is proposed on paddock land to the rear of Grade II listed Mickling Barf in Barton Street, Hatcliffe. A wildlife pond will also be created and the majority of the 3.5 acre site sown with wild flower seed and wild bird mixes to increase biodiversity.

The yurt is intended for overspill accommodation and garden use. The wooded kitchen that will overlook the pond will be for outdoor entertaining.

Solar panels flourish to Scartho Top

About three-quarters of 225 new homes in Scartho Top will have solar photovoltaic panels on their roofs. Persimmon Homes already gained planning permission for 225 more homes on land off Matthew Telford Way in April 2022.

But the developer has applied for permission to place solar panels on almost 150 of the homes. In a cover letter, it is explained this move is prompted by building regulations coming into force that require greater carbon emission reductions from new builds.

Persimmon is also committed to net zero emission, no more carbon going into the atmosphere than it takes out, by 2030. As well as the solar panels, amendments to the 225 homes include energy efficient boilers and controls, and more thermally efficient walls and floors.

The homes will be located close to Scartho Top's proposed £1m village centre.
